Email host breach exposes 345,000 accounts in Germany

1d agoVia The RegisterWritten for Lucame clients

An email hosting provider used by the German political party AfD was attacked, leaking the contents of around 345,000 accounts. Journalists have been going through the tranche of emails, which the party is trying to downplay.

What this means for your business

This is a reminder that your email host is a single point of failure for your entire organisation. If you're using a third-party hosted email service, it's worth asking your provider how mailbox data is protected at rest, what access controls are in place, and whether you'd know quickly if something like this happened to you. UK businesses also need to bear in mind their obligations under UK GDPR: if a breach of this kind exposed client or staff data, you'd be looking at a potential ICO notification within 72 hours.
