Why your cloud carbon figures probably can't be trusted

22h agoVia Computer WeeklyWritten for Lucame clients

The carbon data that cloud providers surface in their dashboards is harder to interpret than it looks. The numbers mix estimated figures, allocated averages, and accounting choices that vary significantly between providers.

What this means for your business

If your business is reporting on Scope 3 emissions or making sustainability claims to clients or lenders, you can't just pull a number from AWS or Azure's dashboard and treat it as accurate. You need to understand how the provider is calculating it, what share of a shared data centre they're attributing to you, and whether embodied emissions from hardware are included at all. Worth raising with your IT adviser before those figures go anywhere near a report or a tender response.
