Security flaw found in Brotli compression library

1d agoVia MicrosoftWritten for Lucame clients

A buffer overflow vulnerability has been identified in the Brotli decoder, a widely used compression library originally developed by Google. Buffer overflow flaws let an attacker send maliciously crafted data that overflows a memory boundary, which can lead to crashes or, in worse cases, arbitrary code execution. Brotli is built into a large number of applications and platforms, including web browsers and server software, so the reach of this vulnerability is broad. Details are still emerging at this stage.

What this means for your business

If your business runs web-facing servers or applications that handle compressed content, it's worth checking with your IT team whether Brotli is in use and whether a patch is available for your platform. For most small businesses relying on managed software or hosted services, your provider should be pushing updates as they come through, but it's reasonable to ask them to confirm. Keep an eye out for patches to browsers, web servers and any runtime environments you depend on.
