When the IT 'support' is a teenager and the PC runs XP

6h agoVia The RegisterWritten for Lucame clients

A support engineer called out to a farm discovered the site's only computer was running Windows XP, hadn't been properly maintained in years, and had been looked after informally by a 14-year-old family member. The machine was handling business-critical tasks in an environment that was, to put it politely, not ideal for electronics.

What this means for your business

It's a funny story, but it's not an unusual one. Plenty of small businesses are still running systems that are years past their supported life, looked after by whoever happened to be willing rather than anyone qualified. Windows XP hasn't had security patches since 2014, which means any machine still running it is wide open. If that machine touches your accounts, your client records, or anything connected to the internet, you've got a real problem. It's worth having someone take an honest look at what's actually running on your network, because the answer is sometimes surprising.
