AI is finding security flaws faster. Patching still matters.

OpenAI's Sam Altman has warned that AI tools are getting good at finding software vulnerabilities, and the security industry needs to keep pace rather than feel overwhelmed by the scale of the problem. His view is that the only way through a growing backlog of patches and discovered flaws is to deal with them, not defer them.

What this means for your business

For a small or mid-sized UK business, this is a reminder that patch management isn't going away as a priority. If anything, AI-assisted scanning means vulnerabilities in your systems are more likely to be found by attackers before your IT team gets to them. Talk to your IT provider about how quickly critical patches are being applied across your estate, and whether anything is sitting unpatched because it's been deemed too disruptive to fix.
