UK datacentre grid queue rules get government backing

8h agoVia Computer WeeklyWritten for Lucame clients

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero has confirmed it will prioritise datacentre connections to the electricity grid and tighten up how the connection queue is managed. A consultation drew 156 responses that broadly supported stricter queue management, though there was no clear agreement on whether capacity should be reserved for specific uses.

What this means for your business

For most small and mid-sized businesses this won't land on your desk directly, but it does shape the infrastructure that cloud providers, colocation facilities and managed service providers depend on. If you're planning a significant expansion of hosted services or thinking about your own on-premise kit over the next few years, it's worth knowing that datacentre capacity in the UK is under real pressure. Keep an eye on lead times and pricing from your hosting or cloud provider, as grid constraints could start pushing costs up.
